It's almost bedtime. But I just read this article, an op-ed piece, apparently from the Christian Science Monitor. I can't say that I agree with everything she says. But the gist of it expresses something I've tried to say for years.
Christians--especially those who call themselves "evangelicals"--often seem more loyal, more enthused and more devoted to the United States of America. When did we forget that one of our roles involves calling the government to account for her wrongs? When will we learn that our first love must be to Jesus Christ and his kingdom?
When will we return to our first love?
I encourage you, urge you, beg you: Please read this article. Then let me know what you think.

While I have no love of the flag being present in the worship area of a church, I had no consideration at all that some might actually pledge themselves to it during their worship. That, to me, is beyond incredible. Which of these same people pledge themselves publicly and communally to Christ and the Faith of the Church (perhaps by reciting the Nicene Creed)? Which would tolerate making a sign of that faith on themselves bodily?
While I don't think we should shy away from a healthy dose of zeal, the author is right in questioning what she sees as "unquestioning and enthusiastic support". However, I disagree about her interpretation of Christ's dictum to "render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's", that the rest of the week belongs to not to God but the state. Indeed, the opposite is true. Perhaps she just means that some time should be protected for God and him alone. True enough, I just don't think she went far enough. Time, and all of creation, is God's and His alone. What time and resources we have are a gift from him for our proper use, to the glorification of God. Worship of the state has no part in that - for the state, even the United States, is no god and has no divine authority invested in its power, structures or representatives.
